You have been planning your relocation for months, and just in case it happens to rain on your big day, you may not have the option to wait for the weather to change, or to move the date.
Lucky for you, Long Distance Movers Weymouth have come up with a list of tips for moving on a rainy day to help ensure your relocation goes smoothly, and your things stay dry.
1. Get trash bags
Plastic garbage bags are an easy go-to tip as they can be thrown over a pile of clothes on hangers, and a hole is torn for the hanger hooks. Small items, papers, and books can also be packed in the bags to shield them. You can also put in antiques or blankets. When it comes to mattresses, inform our team beforehand just in case you need them to come with mattress bags.
2. Wrap all the things you can
Think of going with shrink wrapping for items such as moving blankets, as they are not waterproof. Doing the same for bigger items such as wooden furniture and other of furniture makes sure they stay dry and clean. For boxes, seal them using heavy duty tape to seal out the moisture.
3. Shorten distances
To make the work easier, you can put all your boxes into a single room like the sitting room, or garage to reduce the moving in and out through the whole house when wet. You can also make sure the moving vehicle is parked as close to the house as possible.
4. Find some cover
Another way is to try and put up a temporary cover over the area which you will be walking. You could use a popup tent between the door and the truck, or just hang a tarp over the road. This could help prevent a lot of things from getting wet.
5. Use makeshift mats
These will make sure people do not slip and fall. Lay down some cardboard on the entrance and also on the path from the door to the truck. Old sheets, rugs or carpets can also be very effective for this.
6. Put some items first
Just in case time is not on your side and you cannot wait out the rain, you can pack up plastic goods before the others. Then by the time the rain lets up, you can now move the more fragile items. For electric equipment, make sure that they are all completely and fully wrapped, and then wait till the rain stops to move them. This ensures that they do not come into contact with any water during the haul.
7. Make sure you protect your house too
There are a lot of people going in and out of your home during this time. Our advice is to put down old towels, blankets or traps to protect your house. Our team can also provide floor protection per the client’s request.
8. Wear the right gear
This is important, especially when it comes to footwear. The right footwear will prevent slips and falls while also keeping you dry. Have some extra clothes and jackets too just in case the rain is a very heavy one. You can also keep some spare change in handy just in case you need a trip to the Laundromat for a fast cycle in the dryer.
9. Make an assembly line
If our team is big enough, you can make an assembly line with some people in the house and others outside, to reduce the mud and water going in. You can also get some family members to help out.
10. Dry as you go
Set aside some towels when packing so that you can wipe off excess water from the boxes after putting them in the truck.
11. Prepare for delays
Sometimes the weather is too bad to drive safely in. This means that you will have to be ready for a delay. It is better for your items to arrive at their destination safely, rather than on time. Long Distance Movers Weymouth will still try to make sure you get your things as quickly as possible, but our safety measures are there to protect you as well as us.
12. Have an emergency kit ready
Our crew tries its best to be safe; however, some accidents might still occur. That being said, having a kit of Band-Aids, antibiotic cream and cleansers just in case is recommended.
13. Unbox things upon arrival
It’s recommended to unpack as swiftly as possible. If the boxes have been compromised, the faster the things can be removed, the better. After removing them, throw away the packing items that are not neededas keeping wet ones can encourage the growth of mold. If you still want to use a box and it is wet, put it out to dry before putting it in storage, or using it.
